1. The interpreter’s role is to be a transmitter of communication.

2. Accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and impartiality are four important parts of the “Interpreter’s Code of Ethics.”

3. When the interpreter “Sets the Stage” for interpretation, he or she tells the poll worker (in English) and the voter (in the voter’s language) what the ground rules for the interpretation will be.

4.The interpreter should immediately let both parties know if there is a difference in the dialects that he or she and the voter speak, or if they do speak the same language.

5.If the interpreter does not understand a word that either the poll worker or the voter uses, the interpreter should make a guess about what it means just to keep moving.

6.If there is a misunderstanding that could result in the person not being able to vote, the interpreter should take a “timeout” to help clarify or explain.

7.If the parties are both talking at once, the interpreter should stop them.

8.The voter always has the right to choose his/her/their own interpreter.

9.The poll worker can tell an interpreter not to interpret for a voter.

10.The interpreter can go into the voting booth to assist the voter.
